AF is Auto Focus, the S is for Silent Wave Motor, The focus is controlled from the camera and the SWM is run on a focus cam inside the lens.

From what I know all AF-S lenses has a built in focusing motor so they will focus on the d5100 even though it doesn't have a focus motor built in camera body.

I just recieved my AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G and my D90 is not recognizing the lens in auto-focus mode. It functions manually - but controls blank out when auto is set. Is this a specific compatibility issue - if so - what are recommended troubleshooting steps. Thanks

Answer:

This is brand new out of the box - all contacts are clean. Swap lenses with frequency between stock lens and 300mm zoom with no issues to date on the 2 current lenses in weekly use.

Answer:

The D700 has an internal focus motor, whilst the D60 doesn't. Whilst this doesn't effect this lens, if you brought an older lens like the Nikkor 50mm or 85mm 1.8D you would not be able to autofocus with the D60. Also remember that the because of the 1.5x crop of the D60 you will have an equivalent focal length of 75mm (50mm) or 127.5 (85mm).

I own Nikon d3100 with Kit lens. I am planning to purchase my first Prime lens. I can not decide between the afs- 35mm 1.8 and af-s 50mm 1.8.
I was wondering weather they differ in sharpness and quality or it is just the focal length.

I have both but use a DX body, the 35mm is great on a DX body as its a DX format lens, the 50mm works great on an FX body, Its an FX format too, but if you put an FX lens on a DX body, you have to multiply the 50 by 1.5 and come up with a focal length of 75, they all work great but I think an FX lens on a DX body better than a DX lens on an FX body. As far as sharpness and quality, I say they are the same, I dont know about which one to buy first but I have both, bokeh has been the same on both.

AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G

Answer:

1) According to DxO labs tests, on the D90 (they have no data regarding the D3100) the AF-S f/1.8 G 35mm reaches 42 lp/mm and 50mm 1.8G only 39; but the 50mm has slightly less distortion and chromatic aberration. On real use these lenses have similar sharpness (they are both *excellent*) when used on DX bodies like your D3100 (on FX bodies the 50mm has a clear advantage).

2) Longer lenses have better out of focus background. The bokeh *quality* of them is similar, but the 50's is a bit smoother due to the longer focal length.

3) There isn't an "advantage", they are actually quite different. One is longer, the other is wider. If you intend to have an "all rounder" prime DX lens, than the 35mm is more appropriate. If you intend to do mostly portraits, the longer 50mm has more out of focus background.

4) The real advantage of these primes over zoom lenses is the large 1.8 aperture, excellent for low light necessities. But if all you care is bokeh, the AF-S 55-200 VR actually has better bokeh than *both* - for less money. Both attached pictures were taken with a D5000 and a 55-200vr lens at 200mm @ f/5.6, 1/200 shutter speed, ISO 200.
